Have your pipes been looked at?

5/30/2022 (Permalink)

copper pipes on wall in house When the pipes break break, water damage can happen quickly!

Indoor plumbing has revolutionized the world and is a staple for every home constructed in over nearly the past century. Surprisingly enough, many of the older homes still feature the same fixtures, connections, and piping used in the original construction. While this might provide a vintage feel and attest to the craftsmanship of plumbing in days gone by, it also presents an ever-present threat for adverse conditions or pressure differences to strain elbows and joints until leaks form. A steady leak unseen can cause widespread damages to your home.

While you might not be able to identify the full measure of water damage in your home from a steady leak from your plumbing or its fixtures, once you recognize an issue, it is likely that an even greater area has gotten affected in wall cavities where the bulk of the piping is hidden. When you encounter water damage like this, you need effective mitigation and restoration solutions that can happen as soon as you need them. That is why our SERVPRO rapid response team remains available 24/7 to address emergencies as they happen to any property within our service area.

We have advanced technology to help us identify leaks and moisture pockets in areas difficult to assess without demolition or controlled tear out. With thermal imaging cameras, we can determine where damp areas are inside of wall cavities and into other materials to designate the best locations for drying equipment like air movers and dehumidifiers. Severe moisture pockets could require the use of special equipment that feed hot air directly into these cavities to expedite the drying process.

Aging pipes in your home can ultimately cause problems when the wear and tear catch up to the weakest connection points. No matter how long pipes have been in service, our SERVPRO of SE Portland water restoration technicians can help you to restore the damage they can cause when things do go wrong. Give our experienced professionals a call anytime that you notice water damage by calling (503) 427-9535

Furnace Cleaning

3/30/2022 (Permalink)

cartoon hanydman holding wrench next to furnace Don't wait tel its to late! Call us for a cleaning

Properly maintaining your furnace in your Portland home may be able to help you prevent a costly accident, and the need for fire cleaning afterward. Fortunately, there are some easy maintenance steps that can be taken with most furnaces.

Steps You Can Take..

If your furnace seems to be malfunctioning there are several things that could be wrong. Some of the most basic causes are things you can check for yourself.

• A fuse may be blown, or a circuit tripped causing the unit to lose power
• The thermostat may have been turned off
• The power switch may have been turned off
• On gas units, the pilot light may be out

When to Call a Professional..

Calling a professional can not only help ensure that the furnace is serviced by someone familiar with it’s unit type, but may help you prevent the necessity of a fire cleaning down the road. If you are unsure what the problem is, or find a fuse blown on several occasions, it is best to call a professional for repair. If you smell gas then quickly exit your home and call your gas company or fire department. Do not try to turn on any lights or turn the gas off yourself.

If You Do Experience Problems..

Unfortunately, sometimes fire or smoke damage can occur from a furnace. In events like these a fire damage and restoration professional may be able to help with any smoke cleaning and repairs your home may need. At that time, you may want to have your furnace repaired or replaced by a professional as well.

You can follow some basic steps to keep an eye on your furnace's maintenance needs. While some may be things you can do yourself, others should be done by a professional familiar with the furnace type. If the furnace does malfunction then a restoration and fire cleaning professional may be able to help with your home’s needs.

Springing Forward is So Rewarding, That Extra Hour of Daylight Brings the Time Needed to Tackle Home Maintenance Projects.

Shed with a man on lawnmover, in a yard Great weather means yard work can get done, roofs inspected and gardens planted.

The birds are chirping, and the cherry buds are blooming. It’s time to get outside and check on your home. Here at SERVPRO we wanted to discuss some very important home maintenance ideas for homeowners. Owning a home comes with great pride but knowing what to look for is not always something we are aware of. The first role of a homeowner is to make sure all preventive maintenance is done and needed repairs are made in a timely manner. Here are our top ten exterior inspections to prevent possible future water, mold or fire damage.

  1. Check your roof exterior; look to see if any shingles are missing or not properly lined. Make sure any valleys of your roof are clear of debris. Check for mold growing. Check the flashing around the chimney and anything else that sticks out of the roof.
  2. Check the roof interior; go into your attic and inspect for roof leaks, sagging or black lines. The black line is the path from where the water started.
  3. Check the fascia, gutters, downspouts, siding and corner boards on your home.
  4. Check windows, doors, decks, porches and stairs.
  5. Check your irrigation, make sure no pipes are exposed or nozzles are broken.
  6. Clear away any shrubs or trees that touch your home; to prevent rodents or insects from crawling in.
  7. Check your HVAC System, have it inspected?
  8. Check all your outside facets for leaks.
  9. Check the foundation of your home for cracks. Go in your crawl hole or into your basement to detect any water. Call SERVPRO for mold testing, if water is discovered.
  10. Check for exposed wires or broken pipes.

If you need assistance with any of the above items, reach out to SERVPRO. We are here to help! As a contractor with many certifications, we have the tools, access and knowledge to provide any work you may need! Give our office a call anytime with any questions you may have.

Helping out During a Pandemic

3/30/2020 (Permalink)

Black and white picture with a clock in the background Don't let the past stop you from the future, take action and help others during this pandemic.

Today I would like to take a moment and think about the elderly. Many of us have loved ones in retirement homes, nursing homes or some sort of facility where they are on full lock down measures. We know this is a lonely time for them and they long to hear from family and friends. We see continued effort out of our communities, to form some kind of interaction with the elderly, to let them know that we are here and care. We too here at SERVPRO want to give some reminders on how you can get involved!

1) Pick up the phone and call, many are not on social media and do not have the functions of text messaging.

2) Mail a letter, as Easter approaches lets make sure our loved ones get a personalized letter. Nothing say you care more then a hand written note!

3) Leave something at the front desk of the location they live, the staff are trained on how to sanitize and protect the items left for your loved one.

4) Surprise them with food to be delivered to them. Most are confined to eating in their private quarters.

5) Send them items like; books, puzzles, crafting items and flowers to brighten their day.

6) Ask them if there is any way you can help with making sure they are getting their needs met; medications filled, grocery store items, ways to exercise while indoors etc.

7) Call and sing with them. (I say this as my great uncle loves to sing and it lifts his spirit and mine as well)

Here at SERVPRO our families, just like yours mean, the world to us. Stay Healthy, Stay Home, Stay Connected!

Going the Distance

3/24/2020 (Permalink)

House on fire with fireman outside Firefighters on scene of a house fire.

A short story from our marketing manager. I was driving home after a long day’s work and noticed a plume of smoke off in the distance. I was on the I5 freeway just passing one of two exits prior to the smoke. As I got closer and realized the plume of smoke was not changing in color, as it does when fire is being put out, I had a surge of panic in my heart. I knew that black smoke meant there was a massive fire and people were in danger. At that moment I decided to take the second exit available and follow the smoke. I arrived on scene to find a 2000 square foot home on fire, flames bursting from the windows. Fire department arrived on scene at the same time as I did. As I looked around, I seen many onlookers gathering. My concern was, where were the people that lived here? As I walked closer, I found myself standing next to the owner. No words spoken, I wrapped my arms around her and held her. I stood there with her for four hours. Grieved with her and held her hand; as she was questioned by the Chief of Fire Department, American Red Cross and numerous other entities. My mind no where else but with this woman in her time of tragedy. I stayed on location with her until she felt comfortable leaving and reassured her that we would secure the remaining of her home.

If someone is in need and we offer a tiny part of our presence during their unbearable time, believe you me, we get more out of it then they do! Here at SERVPRO we go the distance, not because its our job but because we truly love our jobs and are here to help. Don’t hesitate to call in your time of need- SERVPRO of Southeast Portland 503-427-9535
